Facet Joint Injections – Spine Pain

Facet Joint Injections

Facet joint injections are used to treat pain and inflammation in the joints that line either side of the spinal bones. These facet joints serve as hinges between vertebrae, allowing them to move smoothly. However, the nerves in these joints can become inflamed with wear and tear. At Pain Care, we often see patients who are experiencing osteoarthritis of their facet joints, which can lead to discomfort and limited motion of the spine. To help people in Metro Atlanta, Georgia, with these symptoms, we offer facet joint injections as just one of our many noninvasive and minimally invasive treatment options for people with chronic pain.

When our physicians perform facet joint injections as part of a patient’s treatment regimen, they may either rely on it as a diagnostic tool or to help manage pain. Either way, our method of performing these procedures for people in the Metro Atlanta area remains the same:

  • Numbing the skin above the affected joint
  • Determining the exact position of the joint through the use of fluoroscopy (a type of X-ray imaging) and the injection of contrast dye into the joint
  • Carefully injecting a mixture of anesthetic medication and an anti-inflammatory steroid to soothe the irritated area
  • Bandaging the injection site and assessing changes in the patient’s pain level
