Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a highly specialized field that uses the body’s natural healing cells to repair damaged tissues and regrow new, healthy tissues. These treatments go beyond simply managing your pain. They ease your pain by regenerating new tissues that heal the problem and restore your well-being.

What type of regenerative medicine might I receive?

The team at Pain Care, LLC, in conjunction with the Stem Cell Institute of Georgia, offers two types of regenerative medicine:

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

Your blood naturally contains platelets, plasma (the fluid part), and red and white blood cells. Every time you’re injured, platelets travel to the area and release proteins called growth factors that trigger the healing response.

PRP contains plasma together with a high concentration of platelets and other cells from your blood that enhance healing. When your provider injects PRP at the site of your injury, the platelets accelerate healing, reduce inflammation, and support tissue regeneration.

Your PRP treatment comes from a small sample of your blood. Pain Care, LLC, uses the Harvest® Platelet Concentrate System to process the blood and produce PRP in the office.

Concentrated bone marrow aspirate (BMA)

Bone marrow (in the center of your bones) is an exceptional source of stem cells. Stem cells are essential for healing because they self-replicate and produce new stem cells.

Then the new cells develop into the tissues needed to heal and repair your body, including new muscle, bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and other tissues.

Your provider produces BMA in the office by drawing a bone marrow sample from your hip. Then they use the Harvest® Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate System to separate stem cells from the marrow, creating BMA that they inject at the site of your injury.

What conditions does regenerative medicine treat?

PRP and BMA have the potential to treat nearly every type of injury or disease that causes your pain. However, the Pain Care, LLC, team most often uses regenerative medicine to accelerate healing in the conditions responsible for chronic pain, as well as problems that cause joint, leg, shoulder, neck, and back pain.

These are a few examples of the musculoskeletal injuries and conditions that improve with regenerative medicine treatments:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Herniated discs
  • Ligament sprains and tears
  • Tendon and muscle injuries
  • Cartilage injuries
  • Tendinitis
  • Bursitis

Since your regenerative medicine treatments use your body’s healing cells, you don’t need to worry about side effects.
